WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S AS YOU LIKE IT
Summary from: "The Shakespeare Encyclopedia: The Complete Guide to the Man and His Works" by A. D. Cousins
Duke Frederick has usurped his brother, Duke Senior, who is now living exiled in the Forest of Arden. Oliver, the eldest son of a disgraced knight, plots to kill his youngest brother, Orlando. After defeating Frederick’s champion in a court wrestling match, Orlando attracts the attention of Duke Senior’s daughter Rosalind, cousin and childhood friend of Celia, Frederick’s daughter.
Frederick banishes Rosalind from the court. Celia and Rosalind escape to the forest with the clown, Touchstone. Celia becomes “Aliena,” while Rosalind disguises herself as a boy, Ganymed. Orlando also escapes to the forest with his old servant, Adam. All meet Duke Senior, whose followers in the forest include the world-weary Jaques. Rosalind, as Ganymed, befriends Orlando and offers to pretend to be his beloved Rosalind. Local shepherds and shepherdess mirror the love antics of their forest interlopers.
Orlando saves Oliver's life and they are reconciled. Rosalind reveals her identity and, at a pagan forest ceremony, promises to marry Orlando. Duke Senior is restored to his dukedom.
